![]() ![]() The scene is 17 years old and some of the N64's most popular games are still totally unplayable. It was totally dominated by commercial development the developers aimed to get Mario 64 and Ocarina running ASAP to make money, and they totally sacrificed long-term quality and accuracy for it. It also makes it really hard to maintain the project longterm, and the profit motive isn't there to polish the emulator or aim for completion. But this means hacky development full of game-specific code, resulting in inaccurate emulators that fail on large parts of the library and don't preserve the console's history. Commercial emulators aim to get the popular games to a playable state as quickly as possible, because that's where the money is. Two or three competing teams will all be researching the same things at the same time, and when there are only a tiny number of people working in the scene to begin with, that's a ton of manpower getting wasted on redundant work. ![]() They also want to keep their team as small as possible, so each team member gets a larger share of profits, but this limits how much research can be done. But a commercial project wants to keep its research private, lest its competitors gain an advantage. It involves many people building up the knowledge of the target machine over time. ![]() Usually, the reverse-engineering work is done communally, with some people taking machines apart to study them, experts in very specific things helping on bits and pieces here and there, lots of volunteers who contribute one or two weekends of time, help solve one specific problem, etc. Join us at /r/EmuDev Android Emulator accuracy tests:Īre you an emulator developer?
